SVS COLLISIONS

Being in two different places at the same time – sounds more like a pipe dream than reality. Yet scientists have been dealing with this phenomenon for decades: What actually is reality when something can be there and not there at the same time? Does invisible dark matter lie behind this cosmological conundrum? What certainly strikes us is that particle physics employs a vocabulary remarkably similar to sound: frequencies, waves, noise, transients, silence.

The SVS collective started a dialogue with scientists to express common themes through a common language: Is music subjected to chronology? Can temporal rigour be overcome? How do particles sound when they collide? In summer 2021, SVS invited sound artists to collaborate with physicists at the Laboratorio subterraneo de Canfranc, one of the leading research laboratories for dark matter in the Pyrenees, Spain, and established an environment for interdisciplinary experimentation. From the process of mutual exchange, various artistic formats emerged – from mixed media works to performances – that mediate between and link both worlds.

EXHIBITION + FESTIVAL

From 19 to 21, 23+24 July 2022, works created during the residency in Canfranc will be presented as part of the mixed-media festival COLLISIONS. In addition, from 19 to 21 July there will be an extensive music programme with concerts, live performances and DJ sets by international guest artists and the participants of the residency.

MONOM / 4DSOUND at STUDIO 1

MONOM is a studio exploring the potential of spatial sound as an expressive medium using 4DSOUND technology, an advanced multichannel sound environment and instrument which enables the production of audio holograms.

ABOUT SVS

Initiated by composer Benedikt Brachtel and music producer Daniel Hermann-Collini, SVS Creative Labs, the residencies for sound-related art, have been taking place in the most remote places in Europe. The new series COLLISIONS was created to expand the various artistic perspectives beyond the boundaries of the self-referential.

Being in two different places at the same time – that sounds more like a pipe dream than reality. And yet scientists have been working on precisely this phenomenon for decades: What is our reality actually like if something can be there and not there at the same time? Is this barely perceptible form of matter even behind one of the greatest mysteries of cosmology, namely the invisible dark matter that is nevertheless necessary for the existence of the universe?

Particle physics and music use a common vocabulary: Waves, Frequencies, Noice, noisecancelling, Transientfiltering etc. – The SVS Collective starts the dialogue with sciuentists from TU Munich and Laboratorio subterráneo de Canfranc to express common subjects through a common language: Is music subjected to chronology? Can temporal stringency be overcome? Can sound be experienced differently? How do particles sound, wenn they collide?

Together with the media artist Daniel Door, composer Benedikt Brachtel and sound artist Daniel Hermann-Collini launched the series SVS Collisions, to expand the respective artistic focus.

This year’s meeting place: The former Art Nouveau railway station of Canfranc.

From 24 July to 8 August 2021 International mixed media artists will work there together with physicists at the Laboratorio subterraneo de Canfranc – one of the leading research laboratories on dark matter – to create an interdisciplinary field of experimentation: In mutual exchange, art forms are to be created that connect both worlds – from multimedia art to visual art to live performances that act as dialogue partners and mediators of science.

The results of this encounter will be presented in Munich later this year.

houaïda

(Composer, Performer)

houaïda is a composer, performer, and scientist. She adopts a trans-disciplinary approach to critically analyze and deconstruct Western and normative perceptions of sound, music, and performance. She holds an MA in astrophysics and is influenced by scientific strategies and embodied practices centered on radical sensuality, collectivity and pluralism. She believes that practicing and learning from both can be a seed to a (Western) revolution that might lead us into a better living and dying with and within the Pluriverse. Her research project Radical Sensuality was supported with a grant award from the Fond Darstellender Künste in 2018/2019. In addition to her solo appearances as houaïda and miss machine and her appearances as part of the Talking Straight collective, she worked for several theater and dance performances, amongst others, at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the Maxim Gorki Theater, and Gropiusbau. She is a former member of the Holly Herndon Ensemble and curated the “post-global” performance series at Maxim Gorki's Studio Я, titled “home: a Transonic Journey.” houaïda works internationally and lives in Berlin.
